Hello, I am Claudia, an archaeologist and licensed tour guide of Rome. I love to lead small groups of tourists to explore hidden corners of ancient Rome. Yes, because Rome is not only the Colosseum and the Roman forum but there are plenty of hidden corners and places that it is worth visiting. I live in an enchanting district located just a few steps from the Colosseum, the Coelian district. Here in Via San Giovanni in Laterano I have also an home stay that I called the home of Roman wonders because is managed by expert archaeologists and art historians who wish to share with guests their knowledge and passion for roman art and archaeology. The home stay web address is www.thehomeofromanwonders.com. The Coelian district is full of elegant cafee and good restaurants. There are several medieval churches and monsateries that is worth visiting. For example, the church of Saint Clement, the church and monastery of Santi Quattro Coronati, the church of Santi Giovanni and Paolo. The church of Saint Clement located along Via San Giovanni in Laterano is a beautiful medieval church that preserves a wonderful byzantine mosaic on the apse . Below the church there are several archaeological layers. Below the basilica there is the paleochristian basilica that contains wonderfull byzantine frescoes and a baptistery. Below the paleochristian basilica there is a roman mytreum from the second century a.d. that preserves the altar of Mytra and the docks for the sacrifice. Near the mytreum there is a roman bulding that was a roman market with shops ( roman taberne) and there is even a spring of water flowing. For more information about the Church of Saint Clement you can visit the web site Basilica of San Clemente (basilicasanclemente.com) - Santi Quattro Coronati dates back to the fourth or fifth century, and is devoted to four anonymous saints and martyrs. The complex of the basilica with its two courtyards, the fortified Cardinal Palace with the Saint Silvester chapel, and the monastery with its cosmatesque cloister is built in a silent and green part of Rome, between the Colosseum and San Giovanni in Laterano, in an out-of-time setting. The hall is entered by ringing for the nuns, who are sworn to remain secluded inside. The sisters pass the key out to the visitors through a trapdoor (once used for receiving abandoned babies). The hall was created in 1246 under Cardinal Stefano Normandis and painted two years later by byzantine artists. The interior, with its beautiful cosmatesque floor, is frescoed on its counterfacade with a depiction of the Final Judgement and there is a small presbytery and altar. On the walls of the hall is the masterpiece Stories of Constantine and Pope Sylvester which depicts the conversion of the first christian Emperor, Constantine, who, according to tradition, was brought closer to the new religion by Pope Sylvester, who then baptized him. Another church close on the Coelian hill is the church of Santi Giovanni and Paolo. This a beautiful romanic church with a towerbell. Below the church there is fourth century roman domus. The domus contains a part from the relics of the two martyrs to which the church is entitled, remarkable late roman frescos and a nymphaeum.
